Anti Prop 8 Protests

A preemptive apology for the poor quality of my prose and editing in this post. It is a wam-bam, so-late-it's-early gut reaction.

Way to go, everyone in Westwood in L.A.! We need more activism! We have to defeat these measures! We have to--AND WE WILL--achieve equality!

[h/t Good As You & Jeremy Hooper: FYI: Mormon temple protest]

I'd been watching some live coverage of the huge protest out there in L.A. on a local internet feed news station. They were taking calls, and it was distressing to hear some of these people call in. The fellow from Orange County who rambled on about homoSEXuals and how we were made by childhood sexual abuse (all the gays he knows are that way, apparently--showing that he must not know many of us). He also seemed a little upset that we were being public and out in the streets protesting our inequality. He seemed to think it was only a hop and a skip (not even a jump) to showing gay sex acts live on TV, seeing as we promote it already with all these homosexual characters that are celebrated. Did he mention that it was a choice yet? I think so. Also, why do we have to be so public about bein' big ol' homos? Can't we all just go hide again? (Pardon the rambling quality, it's partly because that's how he talked, and partly because I'm tired as hell and should be asleep.)

Then there was the fellow calling in from out of the area who wanted them off the streets. He called us sore losers. "The people voted...DEAL WITH IT," seemed to be his attitude. Yeah. How about we strip YOU of fundamental rights and see how YOU like it? And then he had the audacity to say, "I think they need to get off the streets and stop inconveniencing the people who need to get home to their families." OH NO YOU DIDN'T!! I CANNOT EVEN BELIEVE YOU WENT THERE, ASSHOLE!! You want to talk about inconveniencing families???? HOW ABOUT WE TALK ABOUT HOW MUCH YOU INCONVENIENCED LGBT FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN (AND THOSE WITHOUT, TOO)--NOT TO MENTION THE OUTRIGHT HARM YOU CAUSED THEM!! Oh, and he told all LGBT that they should leave California and go somewhere where they tol'rat yur kine. (He didn't say it quite like that, but...hey...what's a late night blog post without hyperbole?)

His comments simply demonstrated the crass ignorance which we must fight. This ignorance of us as PEOPLE who have FEELINGS and FAMILIES and LIVES. PEOPLE who LOVE. It is this ignorance which enabled Prop 8 to pass in the first place, the ability to write us off as non-persons, undeserving of equality.
